Long Thanh – The Mega Airport of the Next Decade
Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai is drawing strong attention from global experts and media. The project is considered a new symbol of Vietnamese aviation in the next decade.
According to the UK-based aviation analytics firm OAG, Long Thanh is forecast to become one of Asia’s “mega airports.” It is expected to handle up to 100 million passengers per year in the future.

Long Thanh – The Mega Airport of the Next Decade
Construction Phases and Timeline
The airport will be developed in three main phases. Phase 1, currently under construction, is set for completion in 2026 with one terminal and one runway.
Its initial capacity is estimated at 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually. This will help relieve overload at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.
Phase 2 will increase capacity to 50 million passengers. After 2035, the project will feature four terminals, four runways, and handle 5 million tons of cargo each year.
The total investment is about 14 billion USD. It is one of the largest airport projects ever built in Southeast Asia.
Strategic Location
Long Thanh is located around 40 kilometers east of Ho Chi Minh City. It lies in the Southern Key Economic Region, near major industrial and export zones.
This location offers strong potential for aviation and logistics growth. Many global airlines have expressed interest in launching direct flights once the airport is operational.
Asia’s Next “Mega Airport”
OAG views Long Thanh as a future “mega airport” along with Changi, Incheon, and Suvarnabhumi. It’s not just an airport, but also a new economic engine for Southern Vietnam.
The airport is expected to boost exports, attract foreign investment, and support tourism growth.
Infrastructure Connectivity
To function efficiently, Long Thanh must be connected with strong infrastructure. The HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway is already in use.
However, the Thu Thiem – Long Thanh light rail and several ring roads are still being prepared. Fast-tracking these projects is vital for the airport’s success.
Logistics and Cargo Opportunities
Long Thanh is set to become a major cargo hub, not just a passenger gateway. It will be capable of handling millions of tons of goods annually.
This creates opportunities for tech and e-commerce logistics. Vietnamese firms can reduce shipping time and cost when exporting to Europe and the U.S.

Long Thanh – The Mega Airport of the Next Decade
Conclusion
Long Thanh represents more than a new airport. It is a strategic step in Vietnam’s aviation, infrastructure, and global integration journey.
When fully operational, it will help position Vietnam as a key player in the global air transport network.
